The Complete Guide to Choosing the Right Artwork Size for Every Room

The Complete Guide to Choosing the Right Artwork Size for Every Room

One of the most common questions I'm asked is "What size artwork should I choose for my room?"

It’s an important question because the size of an artwork can completely change how a room feels. Even a beautiful piece can lose its impact if it’s too small for the wall, while the right size can instantly create a sense of balance, warmth and sophistication.

When buying artwork online, it’s also perfectly natural to worry about getting the scale right. In fact, uncertainty about size is one of the biggest reasons people delay purchasing art.

The good news is that choosing the right artwork is much easier than most people think.

In this short guide, I’ll walk you through some simple principles to help you confidently select artwork that complements your home for years to come.

Think about the room — not just the art

A common mistake is to focus only on the dimensions of the artwork itself.

Instead, begin by looking at the space where it will hang.

Ask yourself:

  • Is this a feature wall or a smaller accent space?
  • Will the artwork hang above furniture?
  • Will it be viewed from across the room or up close?
  • Do I want the artwork to make a statement or quietly complement the space?

Answering these questions will often guide you towards the right size before you even measure.

A simple rule of thumb

If you’re hanging artwork above a sofa, sideboard, console or bed, a useful guideline is for the artwork to occupy around 60–75% of the width of the furniture below it.

This generally creates a pleasing visual balance without making the artwork feel either oversized or lost.

For example:

  • Above a 2.4m sofa, artwork around 1.4–1.8m wide usually works beautifully.
  • Above a queen bed, a larger square or landscape artwork often creates a calm focal point.
  • Above a console table, leave some breathing room on each side rather than matching the furniture edge to edge.

Remember that this is a guide, not a rule. Every room has its own proportions and personality.

Don’t Be Afraid to Go Larger

One of the biggest misconceptions is that larger artwork will overwhelm a room.

In reality, the opposite is often true.

A generously sized artwork creates a single point of focus that allows the room to feel calmer and more cohesive. Smaller pieces scattered across a large wall can sometimes make a room feel busier and less resolved.

Large-scale abstract art is particularly effective because it brings atmosphere without adding visual clutter. Soft layers, subtle textures and gentle colour transitions create presence while maintaining a peaceful, uncluttered feeling.

If you’re deciding between two sizes, the larger option is often the one you’ll appreciate for years to come.

Choosing art for a Living Room

The living room is usually where artwork has the greatest impact.

Whether it’s positioned above the sofa, fireplace or a feature wall, this is often the room where family and guests spend the most time.

Large artwork works especially well here because it anchors the furniture and creates a natural focal point.

If you have a generous wall, a single statement artwork often creates a stronger and more timeless result than several smaller pieces competing for attention.

Art for a Bedroom

Bedrooms benefit from artwork that encourages a sense of calm.

Soft colours, gentle movement and balanced compositions help create a relaxing atmosphere.

When hanging artwork above the bed, leave sufficient space between the headboard and the frame so the artwork has room to breathe.

Many homeowners choose oversized artwork in bedrooms, particularly on walls adjacent to a bed, because it introduces serenity without adding visual noise.

Keep bed cover designs in mind. If you're the kind of person to select bold patterns or florals, then perhaps a simpler artwork is better to give you options to make the bed a feature, without clashing with the art.

Dining rooms, Hallways and Home Offices

Artwork isn’t just for living spaces.

A thoughtfully chosen artwork can transform:

  • a hallway into a welcoming gallery,
  • a dining room into an elegant entertaining space,
  • or a home office into an environment that inspires productivity while remaining calming. Not to mention elevate your Zoom and Teams call presence!

Should I buy artwork Framed or Unframed?

Buying a ready-to-hang artwork with a beautifully crafted timber float frame is the simplest way to buy artwork. Whilst it's a bigger investment upfront, it's often more affordable than paying for your own professional framing. The exception being if you're buying from an international artist and shipping is cost prohibitive.

Buying unframed canvas offers more flexibility, allowing you to choose your own framing style or work with your preferred local framer, rather than buying what the artist has determined for the piece.

Both options have their pros and cons depending on the finish you're after.

Colour matters

While scale is important, colour plays an equally significant role.

Neutral artwork creates a quiet sense of harmony.
Soft blues introduce calm.
Earthy tones add warmth.
Greens help connect interiors with nature.

Rather than trying to match colours perfectly, look for artwork that complements the overall mood of your room.

Abstract art often works particularly well because it enhances a space without dominating it.

It’s about finding a piece that feels right in your home and selecting a size that allows it to be appreciated as it was intended.
